Ecoregions

Special needs

Leach's Storm-Petrels nest on coastal islands. They use crevices or sites with deep, sandy soil for burrowing amid grass (e.g., Phalaris and Elymus) and forb species.

Limiting factors

Availability of suitable nesting islands may be the most important limiting factor for Leach's Storm-Petrels. Nest sites are vulnerable to predation by non-native and artificially abundant native predators. Adults are vulnerable to ingestion of plastic and oil due to surface-foraging behavior at sea.

Conservation actions

Maintain existing closure of nesting areas to human visitation. Continue implementing mammalian predator control at Oregon seabird colonies. Improve census/survey methods. Monitor and minimize impacts from ocean and coastal energy development projects.
