Overview

  • Species Common Name Black Petaltail
  • Species Scientific Name Tanypteryx hageni

Ecoregions

Special needs

Black petaltails use forested areas, usually above 2000 feet in elevation, with access to moist seeps for reproduction. They are found throughout the Cascade Mountains. Some populations are associated with Darlingtonia pitcher plants. One population is located in Clatsop County.

Limiting factors

This species has specialized habitat requirements, particularly for larval development, and is very sensitive to localized disturbances. Petaltails need access to moist seeps for egg-laying and for burrowing nymphs to develop.

Conservation actions

Protect habitat known to support black petaltails. Maintain water quality.
